Gasket

Definition of Rubber Gasket

Rubber Gasket is a flat, ring-shaped or custom-shaped mechanical seal made of elastomer material.
It is placed between two mating surfaces to create a tight, leak-proof connection, prevent fluid or gas leakage, isolate vibration, and reduce noise.

Common Types of Gaskets

Rubber Gaskets

Flexible, good sealing for low-pressure, water, air and general applications.

Flange Gaskets

Used between pipe flanges to prevent leakage of liquid and gas.

Non-Metallic Gaskets

Soft, economical, widely used in pipes, flanges and general equipment.

Semi-Metallic Gaskets

Strong, high pressure & temperature resistant for industrial pipelines.

Metallic Gaskets

Solid metal, for ultra-high pressure, high temperature and heavy industry.

Spiral Wound Gaskets

Good resilience, widely used in high-temperature flanges and valves.

Ring Type Joint Gaskets

Metal RTJ gaskets for high-pressure oil, gas and pipeline systems.

Custom Gaskets

Made to order in special size, shape, material for specific equipment.

Applications of Gasket

Non‑Metallic Gaskets:

  • Rubber/Elastomers: Nitrile (Buna‑N), EPDM, Neoprene, Silicone, Viton®. Good for low‑to‑medium pressure/temperature; excellent chemical resistance.
  • Compressed Fiber/Non‑Asbestos: Aramid, glass fiber, cellulose. General‑purpose; cost‑effective.
  • PTFE (Teflon): Exceptional chemical resistance; low friction; suitable for corrosive media.
  • Cork: Resilient; oil/fuel compatible; automotive/general sealing.

Semi‑Metallic Gaskets:

  • Spiral Wound: Metal strip (stainless steel) + filler (graphite/PTFE). High resilience; ideal for high‑pressure/temperature and thermal cycling.
  • Metal Jacketed: Metal outer shell + soft inner core. Combines metal strength with soft sealing.

Metallic Gaskets:

  • Ring Joint (RTJ): Octagonal/oval; metal‑to‑metal seal; ultra‑high pressure/temperature (oil/gas, refineries).
  • Kammprofile/Serrated: Serrated metal core; excellent for high‑pressure and vacuum.
  • Solid Metal: Copper, aluminum, stainless steel; extreme conditions; requires smooth flanges.

FAQ

Q: What is a Gasket?

A: A gasket is a deformable mechanical seal placed between two mating surfaces to prevent fluid or gas leakage, compensate for surface irregularities, and isolate vibration or corrosion.

Q: What Are the Core Functions of a Gasket?

A: Leak prevention: Block fluid/gas escape or ingress.
Surface compensation: Fill flange imperfections.
Vibration dampening: Absorb shock and reduce fatigue.
Thermal/pressure resistance: Maintain seal under extreme conditions.
Corrosion isolation: Prevent galvanic corrosion between dissimilar metals."

Q: How Do I Choose the Right Gasket?

A: Check 5 key factors:
Media: Chemical compatibility.
Temperature: Max/min operating temp.
Pressure: Static/dynamic pressure.
Flange type & finish.
Environment: Vibration, thermal cycling."

Q: Why Do Gaskets Fail?

A: Wrong material for media/temp/pressure.
Poor installation: dirty flanges, uneven torque.
Compression set & creep relaxation.
Thermal cycling & vibration.
Chemical degradation."

Q: Gasket Storage Tips

A: Cool, dry, dark environment.
Keep flat, avoid bending/folding.
Keep away from chemicals, moisture, sunlight.
