Sealing Principle and Operational Process
Assembly Phase: The FKM O-ring is installed into a pre-machined rectangular or trapezoidal groove. Upon locking the components, the groove walls exert a predetermined amount of compression on the O-ring (static seal compression: 15%–30%; reciprocating dynamic seal compression: 10%–20%; rotary dynamic seal compression: 5%–12%).
Sealing Formation Phase: Under compression, the elastic FKM matrix undergoes elastic deformation, completely filling microscopic gaps between the groove and the mating metal or plastic parts to block media permeation paths. As media pressure rises, the O-ring is forced toward the low-pressure side of the groove, further increasing contact stress at the interface and creating a self-energizing sealing effect.
Continuous Operation Phase: Under conditions of fluctuating pressure and temperature, the FKM material maintains a stable elastic modulus and constant contact stress. Upon system shutdown and depressurization, the material recovers its original annular cross-section through its inherent elasticity; the absence of permanent plastic deformation ensures sealing reliability during reassembly.
Failure Limits: Sealing contact stress fails and media leakage occurs when the compression set exceeds 25%, the media swelling rate exceeds 15%, or surface cracking or hardening appears.
| Application | Recommended Compression |
|---|---|
| Static axial seal | 15%-30% |
| Static radial seal | 20%-35% |
| Dynamic seal |
10%-20% |
